So you want to be a veterinary nurse? Here's how . . .

If you want a career working with animals, veterinary nursing provides a rewarding opportunity that requires both skill and dedication. Animals play an important part of our lives and, for many; the attraction for working with them and caring for them is irresistible.

Veterinary nurses find employment in many different aspects of animal care as well as in the veterinary profession, e.g. education, welfare, rescue roles, wildlife and preservation.

Veterinary nurses are the backbone of our practice. As a student/trainee veterinary nurse you will be involved in nearly every aspect of the practice – theatre, cleaning and sterilisation of instruments, ordering drugs and equipment, laboratory analysis, inpatient care and support, reception and telephone duties and of course general cleaning!

The requirement to undertake training at Vetcare is a minimum age of 17 years and 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, of which English and Maths or Science are compulsory. As well as in-house training one day per week is set aside for formal training at North Trafford College who have been granted approval by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to provide veterinary nurse training. One must also enrol with the British Veterinary Nursing Association as a student nurse. Vetcare is a RCVS approved training and assessment centre (ATAC)

The 2 year VN training course is rewarded by the achievement of an NVQ and the professional title VN after completing ‘portfolio modules’ and written and practical examinations.
